When Can I Change Plan Managers?

Author: Matt Clements

You can choose to change your NDIS plan manager at any time during your plan.

You don't need to wait for a new plan, a plan review or the end of your current funding period.

However, you need to give any notice required by your service agreement and arrange the changeover before your new plan manager can take over.

Do I have to wait until my NDIS plan ends?

No. You can choose another registered plan manager while your current NDIS plan is active. For example, if your plan has another year remaining, you don't need to wait until that year is over.

Your plan can continue while you change who manages your plan-managed funding.

Can I change during a funding period?

Yes. A funding period doesn't stop you from choosing a new plan manager.

Funding periods control when parts of your NDIS funding become available. They aren't fixed contracts with your plan manager.

Think of a funding period like a budget for a set period of time. Changing who helps manage it doesn't reset the budget or give you more money. The same funding rules still apply.

Do I need to give notice before changing?

Sometimes. We’d recommend always giving notice. It's good practice to tell your current plan manager before making the change.

Your service agreement should explain how much notice you need to give and how to end the arrangement.

Check this before choosing your changeover date. Ending an agreement without giving the required notice may have consequences under your agreement, subject to applicable NDIS pricing rules.

There isn't one universal notice period that applies to every participant changing plan managers.

The NDIS Easy Read guide to plan management explains that you should tell your current plan manager and agree on a changeover date.

When should my new plan manager start?

Ideally, your new plan manager should be ready to take over when your existing arrangement ends.

Before agreeing on a date, check that:

  • Your current plan manager knows you intend to leave.
  • You've checked any notice requirements.
  • Your new plan manager is ready to begin.
  • The correct arrangements have been updated with the NDIA.

For plans in the “my NDIS” system (PACE), your new plan manager needs to be recorded as your provider.

Older ”myplace" plans may involve different service booking arrangements.

The NDIS guidance on changing providers explains the different portal arrangements.

Can I switch immediately?

You can start arranging a change whenever you choose, but that doesn't always mean your new plan manager can begin on the same day.

The timing depends on your service agreement, the NDIA's arrangements and when your new plan manager is recorded and ready to act.
