How Long Does It Take to Change Plan Managers?
Author: Matt Clements
There is no fixed timeframe for changing NDIS plan managers.
You can choose a new plan manager at any time during your plan, but the date they can start depends on your current service agreement and the required changeover arrangements.
Some changeovers may be straightforward. Others can take longer if notice requirements or administrative arrangements need to be completed.
What affects how long switching takes?
Three main things can affect your changeover.
1. Your current service agreement
Your service agreement may include a notice period.
This means you may need to tell your current plan manager a certain number of days before your agreement ends.
There isn't a standard notice period that applies to every participant. Check your own service agreement before agreeing on a changeover date.
The NDIS guide to changing providers explains why notice requirements matter.
2. Updating your plan manager with the NDIS
The NDIS needs to have the correct arrangements in place before your new plan manager can manage claims.
For plans in the newer my NDIS system (PACE), your new plan manager must be recorded as your provider before they can submit claims.
For older “myplace” plans, the changeover may require the existing service booking to be ended and new bookings to be arranged.
You can contact the NDIS on 1800 800 110 if you need help.
3. Outstanding invoices and handover information
If you have unpaid provider invoices, they should be included in the handover.
Under the newer my NDIS arrangements, your previous plan manager should forward outstanding invoices to your new plan manager for processing. Your new plan manager can submit eligible claims for supports delivered before the changeover.
You don't necessarily need to wait for every outstanding invoice to be paid before changing plan managers.

Can changing plan managers happen quickly?
It may be possible to arrange a changeover quickly if your notice requirements are satisfied and the necessary NDIS arrangements are completed.
However, there is no universal same-day, seven-day or 28-day switching guarantee.
Think of switching plan managers like passing a relay baton. The handover works best when the next person is ready before the first person lets go.
A clear changeover date can help avoid confusion about who should receive and process your invoices.
How can I avoid delays?
Before your planned changeover date:
- Check your current service agreement.
- Ask your new plan manager what information they need.
- Confirm how the change will be recorded with the NDIA.
- Confirm the date your new plan manager can begin processing invoices.
- Ask how outstanding invoices will be handled.
- Let your providers know when to send invoices to your new plan manager.
You don't need to manage everything alone. Your new plan manager can explain the process and what you need to do.

What if my changeover is taking longer than expected?
Ask your new plan manager what is still outstanding. You may also need to contact your current plan manager or the NDIA to check whether the required arrangements have been completed.
