Can the NDIS Pay for Personal Care?

Yes, the NDIS may fund personal care support if you need assistance with everyday personal activities because of your disability and you have appropriate funding in your plan.

Depending on your needs, personal care can include support with things like showering, dressing and personal hygiene.

Think of personal care funding as support with the everyday things you need to do for yourself when your disability means you need another pair of hands.

What does personal care support include?

Personal care looks different for different people. Depending on your needs and plan, a support worker might help with things such as:

  • showering
  • getting dressed
  • general personal hygiene
  • other everyday personal activities.

The level of assistance depends on what you need and what your funding covers.

Is personal care part of Assistance with Daily Life?

Yes.

The NDIS specifically identifies personal care as one of the everyday tasks that may be supported through Assistance with Daily Life. Assistance with Daily Life is part of Core Supports.

Does everyone with an NDIS plan get personal care support?

No.

NDIS plans are individual. Whether personal care support is funded depends on your disability-related support needs and the funding included in your plan.

Two participants can need very different levels of support, even if some of their circumstances appear similar.

Who can provide personal care?

Support workers can provide personal care where appropriate.

The NDIS says this can include things such as general hygiene, dressing and helping you take medication, with the level of assistance depending on your needs.

Who you choose and how the support is delivered can also depend on how your funding is managed and the requirements applying to the particular support.

How do I know whether my funding covers it?

Start by checking:

  • whether you have Assistance with Daily Life funding
  • what your plan says
  • what support you actually need because of your disability
  • whether the support meets the current NDIS funding rules.

If you're not sure, check before arranging ongoing support.
