What Happens to My Funding When I Change Plan Managers?
Author: Matt Clements
You don't lose your NDIS funding simply because you change plan managers.
Your existing plan stays in place, including its funding amounts, support categories and any funding periods.
Your remaining available funding may still change as eligible claims are processed, but switching plan managers doesn't reset your budget or give you additional funding.
The NDIS guide to plan-managed funding explains how plan management works.
Does my NDIS funding transfer to my new plan manager?
Your funding doesn't need to be transferred between plan managers like money moving between bank accounts.
NDIS funding is administered through the scheme. Your plan manager submits eligible claims and pays your support providers using the funding available in your plan.
Think of it like changing who helps manage your household budget. The money available doesn't change just because a different person helps track the bills.
Your new plan manager takes over the relevant plan management arrangements, not ownership of your NDIS funding.
Will my remaining NDIS budget stay the same?
Changing plan managers doesn't create a new budget or remove funding that is still available under your plan.
However, your remaining balance may change as eligible claims are processed.
For example, imagine you have $5,000 available in a support budget and an eligible $500 claim is paid from that budget. You would generally have $4,500 remaining in that budget, assuming no other claims or adjustments.
Your new plan manager still needs to check the funding available for each support category and funding period.
The NDIS guide to using your funding explains how your funding can be used.
What happens to my funding periods?
Your funding periods continue according to your existing NDIS plan.
A funding period controls when a portion of your funding becomes available and how long that amount needs to last.
Changing plan managers doesn't restart a funding period or bring future funding forward.
For example, if your next funding period begins in December, switching plan managers in October doesn't make December's funding available early.
If you don't use all the funding available in one funding period, the unused amount can roll into your next funding period within the same plan.
However, unused funding doesn't roll into a completely new NDIS plan. Changing plan managers doesn't alter either rule.

What happens to funding for unpaid invoices?
If you have outstanding provider invoices when you switch, those invoices still need to be checked and managed.
An unpaid invoice may represent funding that hasn't yet been claimed. This means your recorded spending may not include every payment still to come.
Your new plan manager should review:
- Claims already paid.
- Claims submitted but not yet finalised.
- Outstanding eligible invoices.
- The funding available for those supports.
This helps you avoid treating money needed for earlier supports as available for new spending.
Read What Happens to My Invoices When I Change? for a detailed explanation of the handover.
Will I need a new NDIS plan?
No. If your funding is already plan-managed, changing to another registered plan manager doesn't require a new NDIS plan.
However, changing how your funding is managed, such as moving from self-managed to plan-managed funding, is a different request that may require an update to your plan.
The NDIS guide to funding management options explains the differences.
How can I check my budget after switching?
Once your new plan manager has access to the correct arrangements, ask them to help you understand:
- How much funding is available in your plan.
- How much you've already spent.
- Which invoices are still outstanding.
- When your next funding period begins, if your plan has funding periods.
- How you can track your spending going forward.
Your plan manager should provide a monthly financial statement showing how much you've spent and how much funding remains. They should also help you understand whether your spending is on track.
Ask your new plan manager how you'll receive these reports and how you can check your budget between statements.
The NDIS guidance for plan managers explains their financial reporting responsibilities.
